It took three long months for Vice President Kamala Harris to wander close to the southern border after being tasked by President Biden to deal with the Administration’s mammoth immigration crisis, but in the Spanish-speaking media, it was their former nemesis, Donald Trump, who drove the news content about the visit.

Anchors and reporters at Univision and Telemundo were so triggered by Trump’s announcement of his visit next week to El Paso, Texas – planned before, and in the absence of, any intention by Harris to actually go there – that they made the 45th a part of the equation, if only to gloat about her getting there first.

CLAUDIA UCEDA, UNIVISION: The visit was announced after former President Donald Trump said he will visit the border next week with a group of Republicans.

[…]

NACHO LOZANO, TELEMUNDO: And this visit will take place days before former President Donald Trump also heads to the border.

[…]

JAVIER VEGA, TELEMUNDO: We also know, and it must be said, that (sic) President Trump will be there next week.

It must be said as context, that former President Trump plans to visit the border as well.

[…]

CAROLINA SARASSA, UNIVISION: And her visit comes days before former President Donald Trump’s trip precisely to the southern border.

[…]

NACHO LOZANO, TELEMUNDO: Finally, Aranxta, she announces that she’s going to be there before former President Donald Trump.

[…]

FRANCISCO FAJARDO: She arrived here amid strong criticism and demands, mainly from Republicans who assure that it is a coincidence that the Vice President arrived just a few days before the visit of former President Trump, also to the state of Texas.

At one Univision newscast aired before Harris’ media tour to El Paso, Texas, reporter Claudia Uceda inserted Trump into her report to accurately state that the former president would visit with a group of Republicans. On the day of the VP’s visit, the station’s anchor Carolina Sarassa, stuck to the official talking points with “her visit comes days before former President Donald Trump’s trip to the southern border.”

At Telemundo, Washington, D.C. correspondent, Javier Vega, twice repeated that “it must be said”, that Trump planned “to visit the border as well.”  Francisco Fajardo, from the midday news edition of NCB’s sister-station, also used the Trump card to distract from the real issues concerning Kamala Harris’ disastrous management of the Biden immigration crisis, insisting that, “She arrived here amid strong criticism and demands, mainly from Republicans who assure that it is a coincidence that the Vice President arrived just a few days before the visit of former President Trump, also to the state of Texas.”
